The Tasty and a few other bloggers have been raving about a USB powered missile launcher which looked cool as hell.
Reading on in the post, it is only available here in the UK, exclusively to Marks and Spencer, so, naturally I had to rush down there and get one.

I installed it this morning in the office and have been pelting everyone in the IT department all morning since, everyone thinks it’s quite possibly the best thing that has ever come out of USB.

Software is included so it can be controlled, able to move left, right, up, down, as you would expect so that it can be aimed, it is actually quite versatile.

Here are some pictures of it in action;

Video of it in action coming later on :D

Looks great all set up on top of your PC! I’m looking forward to seeing the video.

  5. David Willis says:

Just got one for Christmas… Cool toy.. However what it needs is an onboard USB webcam (mine is on order – and has night vision). Then with cunning use of RDP my office chair will never be borrowed again!! :-)

  6. nicc wright says:

The cd is in the bottom of the packaging

  8. Matt says:

Tried installing the software but it gave an error message. Something about it needing to run off DOS. Anyone know if this is down to dodgy software or that it’s incompatible with Windows XP?

If anyone knows of a patch, or where I could download the software, I’d be very grateful.

    Cheers

  9. Chris says:

Dear God Mr Charmingman, please help me. I was given a USB Missile Launcher for Christmas and in my excitement as I beheld the marvellous toy I threw away the box containing the software !

Please, I beg you – as if you were a stripper and I were filled with Alcopops – I beg you to ftp the software somewhere accessible to a moron such as my moronicself.

    Please!

I signed up for a yahoo account for the sole purpose of contacting you, after finding your photo with a “USB Missile Launcher” google.

Dear God I’m upset with myself.

  10. Angelo says:

I found the application used to control the missile launcher a complete pain and wanted to be able to control it remotely via the web.

I spent the day reverse engineering the code and have produced a development library for VB, C# and C/C++.

If people are interested I could post it to them and would gladly accept donation for the time and effort.

  11. Brian says:

I also received one of these as a Christmas present and by New Years Eve it was on the web.

Angelo, are you interested in exchanging notes..

Chris, Did you get the software? If not email be at the address above.

  12. Si says:

Brian, my colleague has decided to take a leave of absence (apparently he’s ill) and left his missile launcher just sitting on the desk, minus the software.

Any chance you could email the software over?

  13. Griz says:

Angelo, I am interested in the library for VB. I have mounted a logitech camera on my rocket launcher using a piece of balsa wood. Center of image is only accurate at about 4 feet but works.
What are you looking for in form of a donation.

    Regards

  14. Simon says:

Got one of these for christmas too. It is indeed very cool, only mine is currently in bits on my desk, gonna spend this weekend (and probably alot longer) putting it back together and rigging it up to a Celoxica RC10 FPGA development board. Forget PC drivers, i’m gonna get this baby working purely from hardware! with a bit of luck the end game will be to get it linked up to a camera and motion tracking! Anyone had a go at reverse engineering the hardware? would be interested in anything anyone has found out.

  15. Aaron says:

You all need to buy a few and put them on Ebay so that us Yanks can buy one!

Those of you pleading for software: check out http://scott.weston.id.au/software/pymissile/

Scott has created a control app in python that runs on Ubuntu Linux and possibly other linux platforms. And maybe other OSs that support python.

    cw_485@hotmail.com

  28. Peter says:

I don’t suppose you could send the reversed engineered code to me? I would love to build a cam into one of these and a VB script could get me on my way. If this is ok can you send it to tac_nedoow@yahoo.co.uk Thanks, Pete.

  29. Joe says:

Hi – I would also be interested in the reverse engineered code too.

Just recieved my launcher again minus the software disc is there any chance someone could email me the windows version of the software?

    Cheers

    Dave

  31. James says:

Has anyone got BDLCAM working with the missile launcher yet? I’ve tried just about every setting on it, with no luck. It’s an awesome toy, but I really want to make it remote-controllable via a web-server so other people in my office can shoot at each other :-)

    Send help to : hintofsarcasm@sonicpenguins.com

    James.

There is a good review of them here – http://www.usb-hub.org/pages/page/1003/

  38. I’ve created a Perl module to control the launcher and also captured a short video of it running the module’s testsuite. You can read more here …

  39. Lee says:

    Hi,

Really glad you like the product. I wanted to put a webcam on it but the commercial guys said it was too pricey. If you have any ideas for cool new gadgets please post your email and I’ll be in touch.
I am trying to set up an email address for ordering new rockets and software.
If you want to be a distributor outside the UK please also post your email.
    Thanks

    Lee

  40. Kim Jones says:

I bought one solely for the purpose of mounting a digital camera on it. I removed all the missile firing mechanism, sawed the top off, put on a plate and using remote desk top, tilt and pan at a remote location to take pictures.
